Identify the Meanings of Words in a Text

Using interesting words adds detail to stories and helps the reader imagine what is happening in their heads.

Sometimes when we are reading, we come across words we haven’t seen or heard before.

To help us understand the meaning of these words, we can use the rest of the sentence as a clue.

Example:

Jack was so hungry that he couldn’t understand why his mum had given him such a diminutive dinner.

We may not be familiar with the word diminutive, but clues in the rest of the sentence tell us that diminutive means small.

Jack was hungry so he couldn't understand why he was given such a small dinner. He wouldn’t be confused if he had been given a big dinner!

We can use clues in the sentences to work out the meanings of any tricky or unknown words
