In this activity, we are going to be looking at summarising what we have read.
To summarise, we pick out important key points.
Here is a sentence summarising my day so far:
I had a yummy breakfast then read a great book.
I left out the extra information like what I had for breakfast and what the book was about as this is just a summary.
Can you summarise your day so far in no more than 10 words?
Summary questions often ask us to order events in a text.
Read this sentence:
Dan ate breakfast then brushed his teeth before school.
Here are the three main events from this sentence:
Dan brushed his teeth. | |
Dan went to school. | |
Dan ate breakfast. |
Which order do these three events go in?
Dan brushed his teeth. | 2 |
Dan went to school. | 3 |
Dan ate breakfast. | 1 |
Dan ate breakfast first, so we number this as 1.
He then brushed his teeth, so this is number 2.
Finally, he went to school, so this is number 3.
In this activity, you will use your summarising skills to order main events from texts.
