In this activity, we will be working out 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, and 3/4 of numbers.
We will have pictures to help us to work these out.
Key vocabulary:
Numerator - the first number (top number) in a fraction.
Denominator - the second number (bottom number) in a fraction.
Let's start by looking at how we work out 1/4 of a number where the numerator is 1.
1/4 of 12 =
This means 12 needs to be split into four equal groups:
So we have split our stars into four groups. As the numerator in 1/4 is one, this means we only need to look at one of the groups.
Here, we have circled one of the groups in red:
There are three stars in one of our four equal groups.
This means that 1/4 of 12 is 3.
Now let's have a look at what we do when the numerator is bigger than 1:
3/4 of 24 =
This time, we are starting with 24
First, we look at the denominator and that is what we are dividing by, which is 4.
So, we need to split 24 into four equal groups:
So we have split our stars into four groups and there are six stars in each group.
As the numerator in 3/4 is three, this means we need to look at three of the groups.
Here, we have circled three of the groups in red:
There are 18 stars in three of our four equal groups.
This means that 3/4 of 24 is 18.
Shall we have a go at some questions?
