In this activity, we will be counting in fractions of halves and quarters.
Let's have a look at what this means.
When we count up in halves, two halves make a whole.
Here we have some circles to show what happens when we count up in halves:
This would continue like this:
3, 3 ½, 4, 4 ½, 5, 5 ½, 6, 6 ½, 7 ,7 ½, 8, 8 ½, 9, 9 ½, 10
Now let's have a look at counting up in quarters.
Four quarters make a whole, so it would look like this:

2 ¼, 2 2/4, 2 ¾, 3, 3 ¼, 3 2/4, 3 ¾, 4, 4 ¼, 4 2/4, 4 ¾, 5, 5 ¼, 5 2/4, 5 ¾, 6, 6 ¼, 6 2/4, 6 ¾, 7, 7 ¼, 7 2/4, 7 ¾, 8, 8 ¼, 8 2/4, 8 ¾, 9, 9 ¼, 9 2/4, 9 ¾, 10.
Remember that 2/4 is the same as 1/2:
This means that when we count up in quarters, we could either write 2/4 or 1/2. As they are equivalent fractions it means the same thing.
Here is counting up in quarters and changing 2/4 to 1/2:
2 ¼, 2 ½, 2 ¾, 3, 3 ¼, 3 ½ , 3 ¾, 4, 4 ¼, 4 ½ , 4 ¾, 5
