Worksheet Overview

There are over 250,000 words in the English language. This is because English has added many words from other languages.

Because we have lots of words, you will find that many of our words have the same, or nearly the same, meaning as other words.

A synonym is a word that has the same, or nearly the same, meaning as another word.

Why is this important?

When we are speaking or writing, we can make it more interesting by adding descriptions and using interesting words – so the more words you know, the better!

In this activity, you will need to try and decide which words are synonyms, and which are not.

thesaurus is a book that contains lists of words and their synonyms. You can use a thesaurus to help you.
