Identify Correct Subject and Verb Agreement

In this activity, you will practise how to correctly use suitable subject verb agreement within your sentences.

The subject in a sentence refers to the thing or person that is carrying out an action.

The object in a sentence does not carry out the action, but is the thing or person that is involved.

Example

The dog ate a delicious, juicy bone.

The dog is the subject of the sentence.

 a delicious, juicy bone is the object.

Subject verb agreement

In the English language, a singular subject will need a singular verb, whereas plural subjects need plural verbs.

Example

A dog loves a juicy bone.

Dogs love a juicy bone.

Tricky rules:

Some pronouns are always singular, so always need a singular verb e.g. everyone and everybody

Everyone is going to the cinema.

But pronouns like all or some can actually be plural or singular.

They are plural if the person or thing referred to can be counted e.g  some girls, all adults 

Or singular, if the person or thing referred to by the pronoun cannot be counted and is seen as singular. e.g. some butter, all the sugar, some paper
