Making copper sulfate crystals
We can make copper sulfate crystals by utilising various different separation techniques.
Lets look at the process below:
1. Gently warm some sulfuric acid.
2. Add copper oxide powder to the acid and stir.
3. Keep adding until no more will dissolve.
4. Filter the mixture to remove the excess copper oxide.
5. Pour the filtrate (the copper sulfate solution) into an evaporating basin.
6. Heat the copper sulfate solution gently to evaporate half of the water.
7. Pour the solution into a watch glass and leave to allow all of the water to evaporate.
You should end up with some beautiful bright blue copper sulfate crystals.
Let's have a go at the questions.
