Worksheet Overview

Nouns can be divided into concrete nouns and abstract nouns.

A concrete noun describes something that we can see, hear, smell, touch or taste, such as dog, spaghetti or perfume.

collie dog

An abstract noun describes something that we can't see, hear, smell, touch or taste, such as happiness, pain or love.

happy girl

Concrete nouns can be divided into three smaller groups: common nouns, proper nouns and collective nouns.

Common nouns describe people, places or things, but as a general class rather than a particular individual, e.g. doctor, city, lion

a lion

Proper nouns describe particular people, places or things, and always begin with a capital letter, e.g. Doctor Jones, London, Molly.

Houses of Parliament London

Collective nouns are nouns that describe groups of things, e.g. flock, team, crowd

flock of sheep

These ones can be a lot of fun - why don't you do a bit of research to find some of the craziest collective nouns. For instance, have you heard of a parliament of owls, or a murmuration of starlings?

That's a lot to remember, so don't worry if you need to check back to this introduction during the activity. Just click on the red help button at any point.
