Order and Compare Numbers to 1,000,000

This activity is about ordering and comparing numbers to one million.

When ordering or comparing numbers, we need to recall our place value knowledge to help us decide which is the smallest/largest.

When the numbers have the same number of digits, we start from the column with the highest value - the column furthest to the left.

Example

Which is larger: 345,233 or 336,287?

Answer

We can see that both are 6-digit numbers that have a 3 in the hundred thousand column.

Therefore, we look at the next column to the right - the ten thousand column.

The first number has a 4 in the ten thousand column and the second number has a 3.

So, 345,233 is larger than 336,287.
