Investigate Magnetic and Non-magnetic Materials

In this worksheet, students will be able to explore the question of whether or not an object is magnetic, and how to tell using experiments.

'Investigate Magnetic and Non-magnetic Materials' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 2

Year:  Year 3 Science worksheets

Curriculum topic:   Forces and Magnets

Curriculum subtopic:   Materials: Magnetic or Not?

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

From your work on magnets you'll have found out that they come in different shapes, sizes and strengths, that they're often made of iron or steel and that they attract certain objects.

Magnets

Magnets have different poles (north and south) and while either pole may attract a magnetic material, magnets repel each other if the same poles are facing (S-S or N-N).

It's often tricky to find out if something is magnetic or not.  Of course, magnets are great to play with and to find out about forces, but how do you go about finding out if something is magnetic?

In this activity, you can test your knowledge of magnetism and also predict what you think is going to happen in a variety of different magnetic situations.

Magnets are so attractive!
