Rocks! They're all around you, but how much do you think about them - not a lot, probably!
In your daily life, you depend on the ground beneath you being solid, so you can get on with life, without having to think about it.
Imagine how hard it must be living in an earthquake zone, like Japan, when you can't trust the ground!
Of course, you've seen loads of rocks: whether they're parts of buildings, walls, roads, whether you're walking on the beach or on a mountain - rocks are all around you.
You can look at them and see how they're similar or different:
- what colour are they?
- are they smooth or rough?
- do they feel hard or crumbly (soft)?
- do they soak up water (these are called permeable rocks) or does water run off them (these are called impermeable rocks)?
These are just some of the questions you can investigate when looking at different types of rock.
