When we read a text, we can often quickly spot a writer's viewpoints or arguments. We know what they think or feel about a topic.
In order to develop skills in English, we need to enhance the way that we look at these arguments and the evidence that we use to support our understanding, To advance in this we have to explain how the evidence backs up the point we have made.
In this activity, we will develop all of these skills. We will be looking at a letter sent by a parent to a local council. Have a read and get ready for the questions!
Dear Councillors,
I would like to express my concerns and frustrations regarding the insufficient recreational opportunities available to teenagers in our local area. As a resident and a parent, I believe it is crucial to address this issue to ensure the well-being and development of our young citizens.
Over the past few years, it has become increasingly evident that our local area lacks the necessary activities and facilities to engage teenagers in constructive and enjoyable ways. This shortage of opportunities has several negative consequences, including:
Limited Social Interaction: Teenagers need opportunities to socialise and build friendships. The lack of activities often leads to social isolation, which can have detrimental effects on their mental and emotional well-being.
Negative Influence: With limited options for positive activities, some teenagers may turn to less desirable forms of entertainment or fall prey to negative influences that can hinder their personal growth and development.
Stagnation of Skills: Adolescence is a crucial period for skill development. Without access to various activities such as sports, arts, and educational programs, teenagers miss out on the chance to acquire new skills and discover their passions.
Safety Concerns: When teenagers have nowhere to go and nothing to do, they may be more likely to engage in risky behaviour or loiter in public spaces, potentially leading to safety concerns within our community.
I strongly believe that addressing this issue is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic investment in our community's future. To rectify this situation, I would like to propose the following actions:
Youth Centre: Establish a dedicated youth centre equipped with recreational facilities, study areas, and programs that cater to the diverse interests and needs of teenagers in our community.
Expanded Sports and Arts Programs: Collaborate with local schools and organisations to expand sports, arts, and cultural programs, making them more accessible to teenagers.
Community Engagement: Encourage community members to get involved by volunteering their time, expertise, or resources to create and support youth-focused initiatives.
Safe Spaces: Ensure that public spaces are safe and inviting for teenagers, discouraging antisocial behaviour, and promoting positive interaction.
I understand that budget constraints and other challenges may hinder the immediate implementation of these suggestions, but I believe that with careful planning and community support, we can make significant progress in addressing the lack of activities for teenagers in our local area.
I kindly request that you consider these proposals seriously and engage in a dialogue with concerned citizens and local organisations to find viable solutions. The future of our community depends on our collective commitment to the well-being and development of our young residents.
Thank you for your attention in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you soon and participating in the efforts to enhance the quality of life for teenagers in our local area.
