Worksheet Overview

Whenever we read a text, either fiction or non-fiction, we can form an opinion or viewpoint on that text quickly. And it isn't just the text. It can be the place described, the events which happen or the characters presented upon which we can form this point of view.

In order to support any statements we might make about the text, we need to find evidence from the text to support this.

In this activity, we will develop the skills we need to locate and select the appropriate supporting statement for any opinions we might have.

We might also start to recognise the language features and vocabulary choices that writer's make to help us form these opinions.

Here is the fiction text for this activity.

In the heart of a dense and mysterious forest, hidden deep within the gnarled trees and eerie mist, there dwells a truly terrifying presence that chills the bones of even the bravest souls. Meet the Scary Witch of Whispering Woods, a creature that has haunted the imaginations of local kids for generations.

With a crooked, hunched back and a long, hooked nose, this wicked witch is a sight to behold. Her tangled mane of wiry, grey hair hangs down like twisted vines, concealing her pale and wizened face. Her eyes, like smouldering embers, gleam with a malevolent glint that can make anyone shiver in fear. Dressed in tattered, dark robes that blend seamlessly with the shadows, she moves with an eerie grace that belies her age.

But it's not just her appearance that sends shivers down your spine. The Scary Witch of Whispering Woods is said to have an unnerving ability to communicate with the creatures of the forest. She can summon owls, crows, and bats with a mere whisper, making the night come alive with her eerie incantations. Her cackling laughter echoes through the trees, a bone-chilling sound that lingers in the air long after she's gone.

Beware if you ever find yourself lost in Whispering Woods, for the Scary Witch is known to cast spells that twist the paths and confuse the senses. She lays traps and tricks to lure those who wander too close to her lair, ensnaring them in her web of darkness. It's said that she's always on the lookout for mischievous or disrespectful youngsters, ready to teach them a lesson they'll never forget.

But, despite her terrifying reputation, the Scary Witch is not without her secrets. Some say that she was once a powerful enchantress who was betrayed and cast into the forest, where her heart turned cold and vengeful. Others believe that deep within her dark heart, there may still be a flicker of humanity waiting to be awakened.

So, if you dare to venture into the haunted depths of Whispering Woods, be sure to heed the warnings of the locals and tread carefully. The Scary Witch may be a formidable foe, but she also holds the key to untold mysteries and adventures that await those brave enough to seek them out. Just remember, you never know what secrets lie behind her frightening facade, and the forest has many stories to tell those who are willing to listen.
