Whenever you are creating a piece of non-fiction writing and you really want to engage your audience, a great literary device to use is emotive language.

Emotive language is exactly what it sounds like - language which creates emotion.

You may want your audience to feel a certain way, or recognise how you feel. You might want to take your audience on an emotional roller-coaster ride. You might want to encourage your audience to take action after reading your words.

These are all the effects of emotive language and it is also important to be able to explain the effects that another writer has created by using emotive language.

Have a look at this speech on climate change (you might already be able to spot some emotive language at work) and then get ready for the questions.

We've got a situation on our hands, and it's not just any situation; it's a crisis that affects every single one of us, and it's called climate change. But don't worry; we're not here to scare you. We're here to empower you to make a difference!

Imagine this: Your favourite beach, where you've built countless sandcastles might vanish. Those lush forests you love to explore may disappear. The animals you adore might struggle to survive. That's the harsh reality of climate change.

Climate change is our planet's fever, and we're the doctors. Our Earth is getting hotter, and it's causing all sorts of problems. Melting ice caps, extreme weather, and rising sea levels are just a few symptoms. But here's the thing: we can help heal our planet.

Think of every action you take - from using less plastic to conserving energy - as a tiny superhero saving the day. When you reduce, reuse, and recycle, you're fighting the villains of pollution and waste. When you plant trees, you're battling the bad guys of deforestation. And when you speak up and spread the word, you're a climate change superhero!

You see, it's not just about saving polar bears (although they're awesome!). It's about securing our future. Your future. The choices we make today will determine what kind of world we inherit tomorrow.

So, let's rise to the challenge! Let's be the generation that turns the tide on climate change. We're talking about cleaner air, cooler temperatures, and a planet where everyone can thrive. It's a mission worth accepting, and we're the perfect team to tackle it.

Remember, climate change is not just a problem - it's an opportunity. An opportunity to stand up, make a change, and show the world that together…we can be the heroes our planet needs.
