In this activity, we will be learning how to find one tenth of a number or quantity.
When we divide one whole into ten equal pieces, each one is called one tenth, 0.1 or 1/10.
In numbers with a decimal point, the number immediately to the right of the decimal point shows how many tenths there are. It is the tenths column.
So 0.3 shows three tenths and 5.8 shows five whole numbers and eight tenths.
This bar model shows that one whole is the same as, or equal to, ten tenths.
1 whole ÷ by 10 = 0.1
To divide by 10, or find one tenth, we simply move digits one place to the right.
Example
Eight is divided into tenths.
What value does each part have?
Answer
To divide by 10, or find one tenth, we simply move digits one place to the right.
So, 8 ÷ 10 = 0.8
One tenth of eight is 0.8 or 8/10.
Now you are ready to try some of these for yourself!
