In this activity, we will be learning how to divide fractions by other fractions.
We can do this by following some simple steps!
Remember: Keep, Flip and Change!
KFC
No, not that sort of KFC.
Read on and we'll show you!
Let's try dividing a pair of fractions: 1/2 ÷ 2/3
Step 1: Keep the first fraction the same.
1/2 stays as 1/2
Step 2: Flip the second fraction.
2/3 becomes 3/2
Step 3: Change the operation from divide to multiply.
So, our equation will look like this: 1/2 × 3/2
To multiply the fractions, we simply multiply the numerators and the denominators.
1/2 x 3/2 = 3/4
3/4 cannot be simplified so this our final answer.
Let's try an example question together.
Example
Work out the following.
1/9 ÷ 1/4 = __
Answer
First, we do KFC - keep, flip and change.
1/9 ÷ 1/4 will become 1/9 × 4/1
Then we multiply.
1/9 × 4/1 = 4/9
4/9 cannot be simplified any further, so this is our final answer.
Now it's time to try some of these questions yourself.
