'Divide Values by a Given Ratio' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 2

Year:  Year 6 Maths worksheets

Curriculum topic:   Ratio and Proportion

Curriculum subtopic:   Solve Ratio Problems

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

In this activity, we are going to share objects by a given ratio!

If we are given 15 sweets ...

... and asked to share them in a ratio of 2 : 3

That means we have to split them into 2 + 3 = 5 parts in total.

15 ÷ 5 parts = 3 sweets for 1 part

Therefore: 2 parts = 2 x 3 sweets = 6 sweets

3 parts = 3 x 3 sweets = 9 sweets

Quick check:

   2 : 3

= 6 : 9

and 6 + 9 = 15 sweets

Let's try a question!

Example

Charlie has 27 sweets in a bag.

He shares them in a ratio of 2 : 7

How many sweets in each part?

Answer

The sweets are shared in the ratio  2 : 7

That means we split them into 2 + 7 = 9 parts

27 ÷ 9 parts = 3 sweets for each part

One bag has 2 parts

2 x 3 sweets = 6 sweets

One bag has 7 parts

7 x 3 sweets = 21 sweets
