In this activity, we will practise dividing 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using a written method.
Sometimes this method is called 'bus stop' method, or short division.
Let's look at the steps needed to work out 4,328 ÷ 7.
Step1:
7 does not fit into 4.
So, we write a zero above the 4 and write the 4 just above the 3 to make 43.
Step 2:
7 does fit into 43 six times with 1 remaining.
So, we write the 6 above the 3 and the 1 next to the 2 to make 12.
Step 3:
7 fits into 12 once with 5 left over.
We write the 1 over the 2 and the 5 next to the 8 to make 58.
Step 4:
7 fits into 58 eight times with 2 left over.
We write the 8 over the 8 and the left over 2 as a remainder.
Now it's time to try some for yourself.
