Remember that there are 100 pence in £1.
In this activity, we are going to work out change.
Example
Jack buys 3 ice creams costing 54p each
How much change does he get from £2?
Answer
First, we work out 54 × 3
This is the same as 50 × 3 added to 4 × 3 = £1.50 + 12p = £1.62.
We count on from £1.62 to £1.70 to £2.00 to work out the change.
From £1.62 to £1.70 is 8p.
From £1.70 to £2.00 is 30p.
The change is 8p + 30p = 38p.
Does that make sense?
Let's try some questions.
