In this activity, we will be learning how to count in tenths.
When we divide one whole into ten equal pieces, each one is called one tenth or 1/10.
This bar model shows that one whole is the same as, or equal to, ten tenths.
In numbers with a decimal point, the number immediately to the right of the decimal point shows how many tenths there are. It is the tenths column.
So 0.3 shows three tenths and 5.8 shows five whole numbers and eight tenths.
We can write one tenth as 1/10 or 0.1.
Example
Write the next term in this sequence:
0.1, 0.2, 0.3, __
Answer
Let's look carefully at the sequence.
It appears to be counting up in tenths.
The next term will be 0.4.
Now you are ready to try some of these for yourself!
