2D (two dimensional) shapes are flat and can only be drawn on paper.
For the 2D shapes, we should know how many sides they have. A side is a line that joins up two corners of the shape. For example, a triangle always has three sides.
Let's have a look at how many sides different 2D shapes have.
One side:
Here, we have a circle and an oval. They just have one curved side.
Three sides:
For three-sided shapes we have triangles.
Four sides:
There are lots of four-sided shapes. We have a square, where all the sides are the same length.
There is a rectangle. In a rectangle, the opposite sides are the same length and the sides touching are different lengths:
We also have a kite and a rhombus that have four sides.
We can recognise a kite as it looks like the kite that we fly!
A rhombus looks like a diamond:
Five sides:
A shape with five sides is called a pentagon.
Six sides:
A shape with six sides is called a hexagon.
Eight sides:
A shape with eight sides is called an octagon.
We are going to answer questions on the number of sides on these 2D shapes.
Shall we get started?
