An improper fraction is a number bigger than 1 whole.

Therefore, the numerator is bigger than the denominator (circled below)

Let's take

This means 5 quarters, and we all know that there are 4 quarters in a whole, so we have one quarter left.

However, we do not want to draw them out each time, so let's do an example with a short cut!

This represents 5 thirds

We can say that 5 ÷ 3 = 1 with a remainder of 2. The remainder of 2 is 2/3
