Time is passing all of the time.
Even reading this sentence takes time... but how long?
In this activity, we are going to be working out how long some things take to happen!
Facts we need to know:
60 seconds = 1 minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
Example
Simone's piano lesson starts at 9:15 a.m. and ends at 10:20 a.m.
How long does the lesson last?
In this question, we need to find how much time passes between 9:15 a.m. and 10:20 a.m.
We can see that the times on these clocks read 9:15 and 10:20
One hour will pass from 9:15 to 10:15 (the blue minute hand will have gone around once)
We can then count on another 5 minutes from 10:15 to 10:20 (each little dash is one minute)
Finally, add 1 hour (60 minutes) and 5 minutes to get the total time - 1 hour and 5 minutes (65 minutes)
The piano lesson lasts for 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Example 2
Frances goes on holiday for 2 weeks.
How many days is this?
There are 7 days in one week.
Frances goes for 2 weeks: 2 x 7 = 14 days.
Frances goes on holiday for 14 days.
Now, why don't you have a go at some questions?
