In this activity, we will calculate the number of outcomes that are possible in a variety of situations.
When we roll an ordinary die there are 6 possible outcomes.
If this spinner was spun there would be 8 possible outcomes.
What can we do with this information?
Example
How many possible outcomes are there when we flip a coin and roll an ordinary die?
Answer
Outcomes include heads and 1, heads and 2 ...etc
For each number on the dice 1-6, we can get heads or tails on the coin.
The number of outcomes = 2 x 6 = 12
