Worksheet Overview

Do you ever go to the shop to buy something and wonder if you have enough money?

Worry no more!

a wallet

In this activity, we will practise adding amounts of money to work out how much change we should get.

Remember:

There are 100 pence in one pound (£)

£3.45 means £3 and 45 pence.

Let's get started.

chocolate bar

Chocolate bars cost 65p each.

If Sara buys 4 bars, how how change from £5 will she get?

First, we need to work out 4 lots of 65p.

65 x 4 = 260p (£2.60)

Now we subtract this from 500 (£5.00)

500 - 260 = 240 (£2.40)

Sara will get £2.40 change.

girl thinking

Let's look at another question.

Comics cost £1.50 and sweets cost 75p.

How much will one comic and one packet of sweets cost altogether?

heart sweets

Let's put both amounts into pence (p).

£1.50 = 150p (multiply by 100)

Now, add the two amounts:  150 + 75 = 225

225p  = £2.25 (divide by 100)

A comic and some sweets will cost £2.25

Now, why don't you answer some questions involving money?
