Time is passing all the time.
Even reading this sentence takes time... but how long?
In this activity, we are going to be working out how long some things take in minutes and/or hours.
Facts we need to know:
60 seconds = 1 minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
Example
Simone's piano lesson starts at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 10:15 a.m.
How long does the lesson last?
In this question, we need to find how much time passes between 9:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.
We can see that the times on these clocks read 9:30 and 10:15
From one digit to the next is 5 minutes (each little dash is 1 minute)
If we count in 5s (5 minutes) from 9:30 clockwise to 10:15, we can see that 45 minutes have passed.
The piano lesson lasts 45 minutes.
Example 2
A film lasts for two and a half hours.
How many minutes is this?
1 hour is equal to 60 minutes
2 hours is equal to 2 x 60 = 120 minutes
Half an hour is 30 minutes (half of 60)
120 + 30 = 150 minutes.
The film lasts 150 minutes.
Now, why don't you have a go at some questions?
