We need to know these facts in order to count in 4s and 8s.

16 20 24 28 32  --

We can see that the pattern here is adding 4.

The following number will be 36 (32 + 4)  

32 40 48 -- 64 72

We can see that the pattern here is adding 8.

The missing number will be 8 more than 48 (48 + 8 = 56)

The missing number is 56

Now, let's use counting in 4s and 8s to solve a word problem!

Pencils come in boxes of 8.

Connie has 3 boxes of pencils;  she has 24 pencils (3 x 8 = 24)

She buys 1 more box.

How many pencils does she now have?

24 + 8 = 32

Connie has 32 pencils.

Now why don't you have a go at counting in multiples of four and eight? 

The numbers may get higher, but just continue to count on in either 4s or 8s!
