Convert Between Measurements with up to Three Decimal Places

In this activity, we're going to be solving problems involving calculating and converting different units of measure.

We'll be using mass, capacity, length, volume and time.

Some of the questions and answers will involve using up to 3 decimal places,

Information that will help - we need to know all of this information.

1,000 g = 1 kg

1,000 ml = 1 l

10 mm = 1 cm

100 cm = 1 m

1,000 m = 1 km

Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³, m³)

60 seconds = 1 minute

60 minutes = 1 hour

24 hours = 1 day

Remember, when we multiply or divide by a multiple of 10, all the digits move to the left or right; the decimal point does not move!

Let's look at an example of the type of question in this activity:

John has 0.75 l of cola and 1.05 l of lemonade.

What is the total amount of liquid in millilitres?

Answer

0.75 l + 1.05 l = 1.8 l  

To convert from l to ml, we need to multiply by 1,000 

1.8 l x 1,000 = 1,800 ml 

The total measure of liquid is 1,800 ml.
