In this activity, we're going to be solving problems involving calculating and converting different units of measure.
We'll be using mass, capacity, length, volume and time.
Some of the questions and answers will involve using up to 2 decimal places.
Information that we need - we need to learn all of this information and keep it in our heads!
1,000 g = 1 kg
1,000 ml = 1 l
10 mm = 1 cm
100 cm = 1 m
1,000 m = 1 km
Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³, m³)
60 seconds = 1 minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
Remember, when we multiply or divide by a multiple of 10, all the digits move to the left or right; the decimal point does not move!
Let's look at an example of the type of question in this activity:
Sara runs 2.35 km
Kyle runs 0.03 km further.
In metres, how far do they run altogether?
Answer
First, we add together the two measures.
2.35 + 2.38 (2.35 + 0.03) = 4.73 km
Now, convert the answer to m (x by 1,000)
4.73 x 1,000 = 4,730 m (remember to add a zero as a place holder)
The total distance run is 4,730 m
Why don't you have a go at some questions now - good luck.
